The Gentle Art Needlecase

NEEDLECASE.jpg (49043 bytes)

Materials Required:

  • 10” x 7” piece of 28 count antique white Jobelan Linen

  • 1 skein of each of the following colors from The Gentle Art:  Pomegranate Woodrose and Butternut Squash (Simply Shaker Sampler Threads)  Sea Spray (Sampler Threads)

  • Black and white sewing thread

  • Felt for insert

  • 10” x 7” piece of linen or other material for backing

Instructions:

  1. Each line of the graph equals one thread of the fabric.

  2. Find the centre of your material.  The left side of the pattern will be next to the centre fold of your needlecase.  Using the black sewing thread, stitch the outline of the shape in the diagram (rightt).  The black threads will be removed later.

  3. The entire needlecase is stitched with one stitch (see diagram below).  Starting in the centre with one strand of Sea Spray, work the centre diamond shape.  Change colors for each section continuing with the pattern.  Use compensation stitches to fit each color into its shape.
    A = Sea Spray
    B = Butternut Squash
    C = Pomegrante
    D = Woodrose

  4. After all stitching is complete, remove black thread outlines.  Finish by sewing backing material to the stitched piece with the white sewing thread.  Cut two pieces of felt slightly smaller than the needlecase, and sew through the centre, attaching them to the needlecase cover.
